Vertical dials

After the horizontal sundial the vertical sundial is probably the most common. Its biggest advantage is that it is visible from a distance.
In Europe vertical dials can be found on East, West and South facing walls. Of course those on East and West facing walls only tell the time for part of the day.

I don't know of any vertical dials in South Africa, but the best place to put them would be on a North facing wall, where there is sun most of the day.
